  MOVING CHECK LIST

 

One to Two Months Before Moving

•£    Book your Movers purchase packing needs

•£  Purchase packing materials: cartons, boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, packing tape, red and black markers.

•£    Fill out Change of Address Forms with Post Office

•£    Contact Insurance Company with new address

•£    Contact Credit Card Companies and Banks, Driver's Licence with Change of Address

•£    If possible take pictures of your belongings and inventory of your belongings

•£    Start to clear your cupboards-Use what you have and not have to pack food items

•£    Finalize Contractors if you have any renovations being done in your new home  

Two to Four Weeks before Moving

•£  Book the Elevators for Both Buildings if moving-Remember the movers need time  to load and arrive at the destination- Stagger the Elevator time slot bookings.   Ensure that the moving van can access the loading area and know how to access the loading  dock

•£  Switch utility services to new address: Cable, Telephones, Internet, Subscriptions to newspaper and magazines etc. (Remember that when you transfer telephone it is switched at midnight i.e.: If you asked to have it transferred on the 5th it will be transferred at 11:59 PM on the 4th)

•£  Go through your closets, dressers and cupboards and sort this is the time to clean out your wardrobe. Remember there are charities that will take clean used items

•£  Leave items in dresser drawers, remember to have plastic to cover and protect for the move day

•£  Pack room by room label your boxes well.

•£  Wrap fragile items using 2 layers of unprinted newsprint for each glass, dish, figurine etc-Wrap firmly but not too tight

•£  Pack glasses standing on end-upside down, but not on sides. Stack dishes on edge fill empty spaces with wadded packing paper, layer bottom with crumpled paper

•£  Ask the moving company or where you purchased your supplies about special boxes for books (smaller boxes), lamp shades, mirrors and pictures and computers

•£  For mirrors place a towel on the glass to provide padding then place tape across like an "X" then cardboard around them.

•£  When packing computer Do not use Bubble Wrap or other plastic-Remove ink cartridges from printers

Moving Day

•£  Double check all shelves, closets, cupboards

•£  Ensure that you leave the home you are moving from in the condition that you would like to move into: Wipe out fridge, clean stove and oven, sinks, wipe out cupboards, vacuum carpets and sweep floors and ensure bathrooms are clean perhaps leaving a roll of bathroom tissue is a nice gesture

•£  Ensure your must need items are marked clearly and are the last to go on the moving van

•£  Do not pack cheque books and other important documents to be sent with the movers

Don't overcrowd boxes especially heavy items i.e. books, kitchen items Securely tape boxes: bottoms, edges and tops. Have scissors and a cutting knife handy when packing
